ITALY: May 4-14, 2019 "Paul's Response to the Roman world" with New Life Church, Everett, WA. (#190501)
This travel study program has three important objectives. First, we want to “put on the skin” of an ancient Roman to understand the challenge the Apostles faced in disseminating the Gospel to the people of their time. Second, we want to examine how the Gospel effectively punctured and eventually overcame the ideology that dominated the pagan world. Finally, we want to firmly grasp the motifs and images used by the Apostle Paul in his thirteen named epistles that were all fully immersed in the Roman “street mentality.”
Day One – Saturday, May 4: Depart USA for Italy. Group flights are reserved from SEA on British Air. Meals and overnight: In flight.
Day Two – Sunday, May 5: Arrival Day. Group flights are scheduled to arrive at 4:15 pm. Transfer to Golden Tulip Hotel, Isola Sacra. Overnight: Isola Sacra (1 of 2). D
Day Three – Monday, May 6: Stepping Back into the Roman World. Theme: “The secret to Roman identity:” how goods, services and transport held an Empire together. Rome was both an Empire and an idea. Today we will examine what held the identity of this vast Empire together and compare that to how God prepared the movement of the Gospel in the hands of the early church. Sites include: Ostia Antica. Overnight: Isola Sacra (2 of 2). B,D
Day Four – Tuesday, May 7: Paul in the World that was Rome. Theme: To be Paul – how God used a man with a Hebrew heart, a Greek tongue and Roman mind. Departing our hotel after breakfast, we will explore the New Testament record of Emperors Augustus and Tiberius. Sites Include: Sperlonga, and Minturno. Overnight: Castel Volturno. B,D
Day Five – Wednesday, May 8: Paul and His Epistles. Theme: Daily life images in the writing of Paul. Paul used motifs in his Epistles that sprung from the daily images of Roman life. By examining massive sites frozen in time from 79 CE, we will uncover these images and see them much more clearly. View of Pozzuoli harbor, tour Pompeii and Herculaneum. Overnight: Sorrento (1 of 2). B
Day Six – Thursday, May 9: Day at Leisure. This is a “choose your preference” day offering high activity vs. leisure activity. To understand the political world of Rome and its impact on the New Testament story, some may choose to take a small vessel from Sorrento to the island of Capri (known for its opulent shopping, or to trek up to where Emperor Tiberius ran the entire Empire for a time during the ministry of Jesus at Villa Jovis. Cost for the round trip hydrofoil is about forty euros per person). Others will remain in Sorrento and explore (or even shop!) in one of Europe’s exclusive and fun destinations! Or you may elect to take the hydrofoil from Sorrento along the beautiful Amalfi coast, and then return either by boat, or on a get-on, get-off bus that stops in Amalfi and Positano. Overnight: Sorrento. (2 of 2) B
Day Seven – Friday, May 10: Permeating Paganism. Theme: Today we will visit a villa of people who were drivers of the Roman culture and cultic life. At an ancient impressive wealthy home site we will become familiar with some of the more attractive pagan rites of Paul’s contemporary culture and begin our discussion of the Gospel taking Rome while it adopted many Roman marks of ideology. We’ll also discuss Paul being encouraged by brothers who came to greet him when he arrived in Italy. Tonight we will enjoy a unique dinner of local cuisine prepared by the staff at our mansio. Sites include: Oplontis (Villa Poppaea), Three Taverns. Overnight: Mansio Foro Appio. B,D
Day Eight – Saturday, May 11: A Spectacular Civilization. Theme: Rome was held together as much by spectacle and entertainment as by anything else. We will visit the Roman Forum and the Colosseum to understand the activities familiar to all Romans. Sites include: Walking tour of Rome including Circus Maximus, View of Isola Tiburina (Tiber Island), Capitoline Hill, Roman Forum, Colosseum. Dinner together on our first night in Rome. Overnight: Rome. (1 of 3) B,D
Day Nine – Sunday, May 12: Paul's Visits in Rome. Theme: Paul was arrested and came to Rome twice. During his first visit he wrote the so-called "Prison Epistles." During the second, he wrote the “Pastoral Epistles.” We will follow places familiar to Paul from these visits from his first arrival to his beheading and burial. Sites include: San Paolo alla Regola, Pantheon, Tres Fontaine, walk on the ancient Appian Way, Catacombs. Overnight: Rome. (2 of 3) B
Day Ten – Monday, May 13: From Empire to World Faith. Theme: The Gospel did not stop with Paul, but was transmitted through the centuries to the ordinary people by means of the arts. One cannot spend time in Rome and miss a visit to the incredible St. Peter’s with the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel. So today we will shift our focus away from Paul's life and break some new ground in our understanding of Bible-based art. Overnight: Rome. (3 of 3) B
Day Eleven – Tuesday, May 14: Depart for USA, arriving later the same day
