Day Two. Thursday, June 25, 2020: Stepping into Paul’s World
Flights should plan to arrive no later than 9:45 AM into Leonardo da Vinci Airport, as our group bus will pick up arriving participants. After our transfer to the hotel to drop our luggage, we will visit nearby Ostia Antica for a walking tour in the ancient ruins. Carefully examining the excavated areas, we will look at the key features of Roman identity and begin to “settle in” to what a Roman in “class-layered society” experienced daily at the time of the New Testament. Walking ancient streets and peering into ancient homes, shops and communal areas, we will begin to embrace the magnitude of reaching that world in the first century. Overnight: Isola Sacra. (D)
Day Three. Friday, June 26, 2020: How Paul passed the Torch of Ministry.
Today we visit Rome to look at Paul’s visits and criminal defense before Nero. We will explore the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, and a visit to Osteria Romana in the region of St. Paul alla Regola, near where Paul likely stayed during the writing of his so-called “prison epistles.” Later, we will make our way to the place that recalls Paul’s execution while considering his words to Timothy. We also want to see some of the physical evidence in the progress of the Gospel in the early centuries at the Catacombs. Overnight: Rome. (B)
Day Four. Saturday, June 27, 2020: The Gospel in Art.
Today we will look at St. Peter’s Cathedral, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel to discern how the Gospel affected the world in western artistic traditions. In the afternoon, we will transfer to the ship at Civitavecchia for our cruise departure. Overnight: On ship (B,D)
Day Five. Sunday, June 28, 2020: The Bay of Naples - Uncovering the Biblical Past.
Most of what we know about the Roman period was derived from the excavations of seven sites around the Bay of Naples that were all destroyed about twelve years after Paul’s last visit to the region by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Today we will visit Herculaneum and Pompeii. (B,D)
Day Six. Monday, June 29, 2020: At Sea – A Study of Paul’s Epistles
While at Sea today along the Tyrrhenian Coast of Italy, we will use our time on board for Bible study in the writings of the Apostle Paul. Stay tuned for the specific topics!
