Next we will go “back in time” with a look at the ancient city of Caesarea Maritima, founded by Herod the Great. On to Mt. Carmel where Elijah confront the prophets of Baal. We will view, then cross the Valley of Armageddon and travel to Nazareth, to see three-room cave style homes of antiquity before we make our way to the Sea of Galilee area for our hotel.  Overnight: by the Sea of Galilee. Today we will be visiting sites around the Sea of Galilee that were the setting of the ministry of Jesus in the Gospels, including the Mount of the Beatitudes, the excavations of ancient Capernaum, new excavations at the NT city of Magdala, and a stunning view from Mt. Arbel. We also plan to look closely at an ancient boat exhibit and even take a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee! Tonight we head back to our hotel near Tiberias. Overnight: By the Sea of Galilee. B, D.

Saturday, February 8, 2020

This morning we depart a bit earlier and make our way to Tel Dan, where the golden calf temple of Jeroboam I was built (1 Kings 12). On to Banias (Caesarea Philippi), where Jesus asked the disciples if they knew Who He was, and Peter declared Jesus to be the Messiah. A little later we will stand on a hill to overlook into Syria, and visit the Talmudic Period site of Qatzrin. Overnight: By the Sea of Galilee. B, D.

Departing our hotel beside the Sea of Galilee today, we will visit the massive ruins of the Roman-Byzantine city of Scythopolis at Beth Shean, before departing along the Jordan Valley to arrive at Qumran, the site where ancient scrolls were found near the Dead Sea. Our hotel will offer us an opportunity to float in the Sea as we close out our travels for the day. Overnight: Dead Sea spa. B, D.

Today we will ascent Masada and engage the story of the Jewish revolt against the ancient Romans. After our cable car ride down from the heights, we will travel to Ein Gedi for a reminder of David’s encounter with King Saul (1 Samuel 24). Next, we travel up to Jerusalem to view the stunning city from Mt. Scopus before checking in to our hotel. Overnight: Jerusalem. B, D.

Following the last week of Jesus’ earth ministry, we will visit the Mt. of Olives and get a “bird’s eye” view of the city of Jerusalem. At the bottom of the mountain we will visit Gethsemane and recall the prayer place and arrest of Jesus by Temple guards and Roman authorities. Next we will visit St. Peter en Gallicantu, a place to recall the questioning of Jesus by Jewish leadership shortly before He was remanded into Roman custody. Leaving Jerusalem for while, we will travel to Bethlehem to recall the place of Jesus’ birth, along with a view of some shepherd's fields, where we will remember those early shepherds who heard the message of the angels. Overnight: Jerusalem. B, D.

 Wednesday, February 12, 2020

This morning we will visit a model of Jerusalem as it probably looked at the time of the Apostle Paul, before we take a sobering look at exhibits of the Holocaust at Yad Vashem. Back to the “Old City" of Jerusalem for a visit to the bustling Jewish Quarter and the nearby Western Wall plaza. The South Wall excavations and Davidson Center will help us visualize what the second Temple looked like at the time of Jesus. Overnight: Jerusalem. B, D.

Near the Western Wall is the access for our visit to a tunnel that reveals ancient Jerusalem’s finds, long hidden beneath piles of destruction. After the tunnel, we will visit the area of the ancient Antonia Fortress and follow the roadway marking the representative journey of the Via Dolorosa (way of sorrows)of Jesus with the Cross, all the way to the Holy Sepulchre, and eventually on to the Garden Tomb (with communion).
