Prepare for Jordan

Your journey to Jordan will take you into the rugged landscapes east of the Jordan River, a land rich with biblical history and natural beauty. From Mount Nebo, where Moses glimpsed the Promised Land, to the ruins of ancient Ammon and the waters where John baptized, Jordan is a place where Scripture and history come alive. This trip is more than sightseeing—it is a spiritual journey that will deepen your faith as you walk through the stories of the Bible in their original setting.

To prepare well, focus on four areas:

  • Prepare your mind with background knowledge.

  • Prepare your stuff so you travel comfortably and wisely.

  • Prepare your body so you can enjoy each day fully.

  • Prepare your heart to hear what God may say along the way.

Prepare Your Mind

Before arriving, take time to look at a map of Jordan. Notice how the land runs along the eastern side of the Jordan River and Dead Sea, stretching south into the desert.

Here are some key biblical and historical places you will encounter:

  • Mount Nebo: Where Moses viewed the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 34).

  • Madaba: Famous for its 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land.

  • Petra: The breathtaking Nabatean city carved into red sandstone cliffs.

  • Amman: The capital, known in Scripture as Rabbah of the Ammonites.

  • The Jordan River: Associated with Joshua’s crossing and John the Baptist’s ministry.

Reading Deuteronomy 32–34, Joshua 3, and Matthew 3 before your trip will make these places resonate deeply. A Bible atlas or study Bible maps showing “Transjordan” regions (Ammon, Moab, Edom, Gilead) will also enrich your preparation.

Prepare Your Stuff

Pack with both modern travel and ancient sites in mind:

  • Bible or Bible app: Essential for reading passages at each site.

  • Clothing: Modest attire is important, especially at religious or cultural sites. Women should carry a light scarf for covering shoulders or hair when required.

  • Shoes: Comfortable walking shoes or sturdy sandals for uneven terrain (Petra especially requires solid footwear).

  • Day bag: A small backpack for water, sunscreen, and journal.

  • Electronics: Jordan uses 220V with Type C/F plugs. Bring adapters for your devices. Most phones and laptops adjust automatically.

  • Sun protection: Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are a must in the desert climate.

Prepare Your Body

You’ll walk a lot in Jordan—Petra alone can be a full day of exploring with long stretches of walking and climbing. Begin walking regularly at home before the trip, and include some stairs or inclines to build stamina.

Hydration is key in the desert climate. Carry a refillable water bottle and drink often. Adjusting to the time zone may take a couple of days; a sleep aid or melatonin may help the first few nights.

Prepare Your Heart

Jordan is more than ruins and landscapes—it is a place of encounter. From the wilderness where Israel wandered, to the river where Jesus was baptized, to the mountaintop where Moses gazed at God’s promise, Jordan invites reflection and renewal.

Three ways to prepare spiritually:

  1. Pray—Ask God to open your heart to His voice in the wilderness and along the river. Invite friends to pray for your journey.

  2. Read—Spend time in Deuteronomy 34, Joshua 3, 2 Kings 2 (Elijah and Elisha crossing the Jordan), and Matthew 3 (the baptism of Jesus).

  3. Journal—Write down your prayers and questions before you leave. As you travel, record what God shows you in these places of deep biblical significance.

The more you prepare, the more your time in Jordan will not just inform your mind, but transform your heart.
