“How We Know: Examining the Evidence for the Bible”

with Martinsburg Young Adults

(Program #251201, taught by Dr. Randall Smith)

Did you ever wonder, “How can we be sure about the ancient scrolls we call the Bible?” I mean, we are trusting an old library of books to guide us… is there real evidence that the events these books record happened the way they said they did? This study program in Israel is designed for youth, and highlights the modern scientific and archaeological discoveries that illustrate the Bible’s trustworthiness to help students have confidence in the Bible’s accounts. Careful examination, along with hikes and fun have been combined to create an outstanding learning experience!

This program includes some Youth Hostels and more basic housing facilities designed to make this more affordable.

Land only: $3599.00 (doubles) $3499.00 (triples*)

To include air from east coast: add $1400.00

*For youth under age 18

Day Two: Sunday, December 28, 2025

Arrival in Israel and transfer to hotel near the airport. Overnight: Ruth Daniel Youth Hostel or similar (1 of 1). D

Questions: How do we know about events of antiquity? Does the story of Jesus “fit” into any reasonable timeline? What makes the Biblical account unique as an historical narrative?

Day Three: Monday, December 29, 2025

Searching for evidence of the Gospel accounts: Today we focus on key evidences for Jesus' public ministry. Sites: Caesarea Maritima, Megiddo, Mt. Arbel. Overnight: Karei Deshe or similar by the Sea of Galilee (1 of 3). B, D

Questions: Is there significant evidence available to describe the earliest followers of Jesus? If so, what can we know of these early “disciples?”

Day Four: Tuesday, December 30, 2025

The Search for the Disciples: Using the four gospel accounts, we will investigate the evidence of the background, education and daily life of the disciples. Sites: Boat ride, Ancient Boat exhibit, Mt. Beatitudes, Magdala, Capernaum, Tiberias. Overnight: By the Sea of Galilee (2 of 3). B, D

Questions: Do Jesus’ teachings as recorded in the Gospels make sense in that time? Why don’t all four Gospels tell the story in exactly the same way and same sequence?

Day Five: Wednesday, December 31, 2025

Examining the Teachings of Jesus up close: Based on the five sermons in the Gospel according to Matthew, our focus will be on the common teaching style of the ancient rabbis. Sites: Tel Dan, Banias (Caesarea Philippi), overlook into Syria, Qatzrin Village, View of Gamla, Mizpe Nokaib (where pigs ran into the sea). Overnight: By the Sea of Galilee (3 of 3). B, D

Questions: Why do so many people “interpret” Jesus’ sayings so differently? Is the text confused or is there another reason"?

Day Six: Thursday, January 1, 2026

Uncovering Jesus’ interactions: Luke’s “Special Section” (10-19) includes a longer narrative of Jesus’ walk through Perea, and some of the toughest teachings of the Savior. Today we will look closely at Beth She’an excavations, Qumran, Jericho. Overnight: Ein Gedi Youth Hostel or similar, Dead Sea area (1 of 1). B, D

Questions: When a major city is uncovered from ancient times, are there ways we can know about the long-dead inhabitants? How can we uncover their story?

Day Seven: Friday, January 2, 2026

Predictive Prophecy as evidence of the Bible’s truthfulness: From the desert storm of Habakkuk, to the salt covenant of David, various Biblical wilderness themes will be highlighted, and then “Up to Jerusalem”.  Sites: Masada, Ein Gedi hike, Jericho. Overnight: Agron Youth Hostel or similar, Jerusalem (1 of 4). B, D

Questions: What evidence do we possess of prediction prophecy where we have a copy of scrolls from before the fulfillment of them? Why are the Dead Sea Scrolls helpful to us to indicate the care of the copying of the Bible?

Day Eight: Saturday, January 3, 2026

Following evidence trails for the work of Jesus: The issues involved in the arrest, trial and conviction of Jesus will be our subject as we journey through the "salvation geography" of Jerusalem in the Gospel According to John. Sites: Temple Mount, Pools of Bethesda, Via Dolorosa, Holy Sepulchre, Garden Tomb. Overnight: Jerusalem (2 of 4). B, D

Questions: Is there evidence of an ancient Temple that matches the finds in Jerusalem? How many passages of Scripture can be carefully demonstrated to be true to the detail based on Jerusalem archaeology?

Day Nine: Sunday, January 4, 2026

Examining the Dispute over Messiahs: With a specific view of the history of "other Messiahs" we will discuss the expectations for the Messiah, and their relationship to the record of the preaching of Jesus.  Sites: Mt. Scopus overview, Gethsemane, St. Peter en Gallicantu. (Afternoon) A closer look at the Birth Narratives of the Gospels: We will investigate what the Biblical accounts tell us of Jesus' birth, based on both the Matthew and Luke accounts. Sites: Bethlehem, Shepherd's Field. Overnight: Jerusalem (3 of 4). B, D

Questions: If others claimed to be Messiah, how can we disagree with the ancient rabbis and claim Jesus met the criteria, and not one of the others? Do the birth narratives concerning Jesus really disagree and contradict one another as has been charged?

Day Ten: Monday, January 5, 2026

Looking over the huge piles of evidence: What evidence do we really have for the events recorded in the Bible? Today, we will summarize our case as we look at Israel Museum. Lunch in Christian Quarter, free time for shopping in the Old City. Dinner at your hotel. Overnight: Jerusalem (4 of 4). B, D

Questions: How many detailed finds that are carefully recovered from the Bible do you believe it will take for others to acknowledge the writings are both true and carefully maintained?
